Leander Loved Hero
Leander loved Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite. He swam across the Helepont (Dardanelles) nightly to make love to her. He was guided by the light she lit for him atop the seaside tower she lived in. Then, one night, a treacherous storm arose while he was swimming to be with her. The wind blew out the light. He lost his way, and, buffeted by the storms, drowned. Hero was distraught, but could do nothing to change her cruel fate.
The journey to be merged with your Hero is oft this way. To be one with your Hero, to accomplish the perilous task of a true Hero, to live out-loud the boldest of your dreams, you must make a daily, perilous journey. And when the powerful winds of difficulty beset, it is predictable that your guiding light will be extinguished, without intention, in spite of great care. It is then that your Hero quest is most perilous. Only an inner compass, and a strong memory of Hero’s light in the tower, will get the Hero-questor back to his ardent love.
There is always this risk. It will happen. Will the Hero-lover be prepared? Will the questor survive? Only fate knows for sure. But is not the greatest challenge of every Hero-worshipper to cheat fate?
In the end, if the Hero-questor drowns, Hero must also bear the burden of the crushing defeat. She, alone, will feel the pain, and bear the burden of her lover’s eternal absence.
It is a selfish thing to be lost in the storm… to miss living your truest dreams… to fail in your quest to be a hero. Selfish and cruel.
Possibilities
We all have Dreams
that never come true.
Dreams about money,
and things we could do
if we had it.
But, when we don’t have money
we don’t feel good enough
about ourselves
to pursue our Dreams.
The frustration
and moments of lonely desperation
when even the simplest of desires go unmet,
Scratch at our Dreams
flushed pale with tearless crying.
Faced with a choice
to follow our Dreams
into the darkness of the Unknown,
Sometimes the fear of the Unknown
is greater than the emptiness inside.
So we gather the cold Known
about our shoulders.
Once, just once
we want to shout “I dare”
For here and now
there will always be despair.
But in the Unknown
of following Dreams
We cannot help knowing
its our only chance…
to be… to live who we are inside.
For if we conquer the fear
of following Dreams
There are always…
Possibilities.

Shakin’ Up North: Canadian Rockabilly, Volume 1 $26.98 The first volume in a mutli-volume set of Canadian rockabilly, this brings together 30 tracks of ground floor rock’n'roll from the land of the wind chill factor. To be honest, much of the fare here veers closer to the ‘billy side of the genre, but just when you think the collection is headed straight for the hoedown, a surprising little number like “Eenie Meenie Miney Moe” by Bob and Lucille or “M… |
