Bruce Marks Between Philadelphia, Moscow, And Kiev
Philadelphia is worlds apart from Moscow and Kiev, but they seemed like a logical place to expand for Bruce Marks of the firm Marks & Sokolov, LLC. They successfully compete with much larger US law firms that have established a presence in the areas and have plans to expand their Moscow and Kiev offices. Bruce Marks has made his name bringing racketeering suits in US Courts against companies, which have been defrauded in Russia and Ukraine. A Russian language major at the University of Pennsylvania, Marks took advantage of the opportunity to get involved in the suits because it was his first opportunity to work in Russia, according to the Russia Journal. His command of the language and knowledge of the history of the former Soviet Union gives him the background to understand the people, and the workings of the business and court systems there.
In a part of the world where corruption in the courts is the norm, Bruce Marks is making a strong stand against some big rivals like Russia’s richest man, Oleg Deripaska, not once but twice. The unfortunate fact is that crime is global but regulatory enforcement is not. Marks discussed the first RICO suit brought in a foreign country against an American company, with OCCRP, saying that any use of RICO as a deterrent is good news. Not that the cases have to reach final resolution in court, they could be settled outside of court as well. Bruce has received a well-earned reputation as an expert on commercial legal matters between the West and the former Soviet Union.
In their office in Kyiv, Ukraine, Bruce Marks believes that the lawyers who join the firm need to speak Ukrainian, as well as Russian and English. In addition, they need to understand the culture of Ukraine to be able to communicate well with the clients there, who grew up under the Soviet system of government. The Kiev office is looking to grow through real estate, banking, and dispute resolution work, in addition to the client work that currently employs them. As a mid sized firm competing with larger US firms, they rely on their reputation of quality legal work, which the Ukraine entrepreneurs value more than size or label.
From a perspective outside the world of law, we can only imagine that as the world becomes smaller, firms like Marks & Sokolov, and lawyers like Bruce Marks are going to seize the opportunities to reach out across continents to challenge individuals and organizations that are, quite simply, doing the wrong thing.
