A Look At The Current Gambling Climate In Maine
Situated in the North Eastern, northerly tip of the New England region of the United States, the state of Maine is famous for rugged scenery, especially its spectacular coastline. Its seafood restaurants are famous throughout the world, and anyone who has partaken of some of Maine’s freshly caught lobsters and clams will not forget the experience in a hurry. Bordered to its south and east by the Atlantic Ocean and by Canada to the north, Maine’s only American neighbor is actually New Hampshire.
Maine is the largest state in New England, yet has a fairly small population of around one point three million. It is an interesting fact that, because of its northerly location, bringing with it difficult, long and cold winters, Maine has become the state with the largest migratory population in America. Due to this much of its population travels south in the winter, to sunnier climes. By the same token during the summer months, due to its moderate temperature and magnificent scenery Maine’s population explodes with returning snowbirds and new visitors from out of state. Another reason for migration from Maine and not just in the winter is that the state does not allow gambling in any form.
For residents of the state who love the taste of Casino action, there are but two options – the first is to travel to New Jersey, which many do, for some live casino action. There are many more who have discovered the convenience of online gambling. They can enjoy the thrills and spills of all their favorite table games, blackjack, roulette, poker and craps as well as any variation of slot game you can imagine, without even leaving the comfort and warmth of your own home. It even makes the thought of being trapped indoors in a freezing Maine winter sound appealing.
In the summer months, Maine operates something called Racinos, which are situated only within the state capitol, Bangor. These are combinations of race tracks and slot arcades. These summer time attractions have proven to be a big hit with the local population year after year. Some of these facilities are fairly massive – the largest, the Hollywood Slots & Bangor Raceway has more than 1,500 machines on the premises, as well as restaurants and bars for those who need a break from the excitement. This would appear to be the nearest thing Maine will have to a casino for the foreseeable future. This is also only a summer attraction as it’s hardly attractive enough to draw someone away from a warm fireplace, when the temperature outside is approaching thirty degrees minus in the winter so should you have a desire to gamble in the other seventy-five percent of the year you’re stuck.
If the state of Maine wants to make itself an even more attractive place for incoming tourism, then it should take a more enlightened view of live casino gambling in all its forms. It could be an excellent form of tax income, as well as providing jobs for the population who return to their Maine residences in the summer months.
